Given Alexandra's beautiful alabaster skin, I decided I wanted to give the painting a more classical feel. This included adding a more evocative background. I studied some of the work of the 19 century academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau and used his pallet to discover the lovely greens he made out of viridian green and yellow ochre. I love her mother's choice of the red jacket. It allowed me to use dramatic red or orange shadows in the face to create a feeling of warmth. |
